Correlation Study of the Changes in Expression Levels between TNF-α IL-6 and VEGF in Invasive Pituitary Adenoma |

Abstract Objective: To investigate the correlation between the changes in the expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in invasive pituitary adenoma tissues and their significance. Methods: Fifty-six patients with pituitary adenomas surgically resected in the neurosurgery department of Chengde Central Hospital were selected and divided into patients with non-functional invasive pituitary adenomas (observation group, 38 patients) and non-functional non-pituitary adenomas (control group, 18 patients) according to the invasiveness of the tumor. The expression levels of TNF-α,, IL-6 and VEGF in the observation and control groups were measured by real-time quantitative PCR and immunohistochemistry to understand the role of the three in the aggressive growth of pituitary adenomas. Results: The expression levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and VEGF mRNA were higher in the observation group than in the control group (all P<0.05), and the results of immunohistochemical staining also showed that the expression of TNF-α, IL-6 and VEGF were higher in the observation group than in the control group, and the differences were of high research value and statistical significance (all P<0.05) . Conclusion: High expression of TNF-α, IL-6 and VEGF in pituitary adenoma tissues may predispose pituitary adenomas to aggressive growth, and low or no expression may lead to even less aggressive or non-invasive growth. TNF-α, IL-6 and VEGF may contribute to aggressive pituitary adenoma growth.
