Abstract:Objective: To investigate the effects of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection on glucose metabolism, C-peptide and insulin sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: 154 patients with T2DM admitted to the hospital during the period from February 2016 to February 2018 were included in the T2DM group. 50 healthy adults were included in the control group. The HCMV-DNA viral load, fasting plasma Glucose (FPG), C-peptide (C-P), fasting insulin (Fins), insulin sensitivity index (ISI) and T lymphocyte subsets in all subjects were determined and analyzed. Results: The positive rates of HCMV-DNA in the T2DM group and the control group were 50.64% and 26.00%, respectively. The HCMV-DNA load in the T2DM group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). The FPG, ratio of CD4+ lymphocytes and CD4+/CD8+ ratio were increased, the Fins, CP, ISI and ratio of CD8+ T lymphocytes were decreased in the T2DM group, compared with the control group (P<0.05). The increase or increase of each index in HCMV-DNA positive patients was significantly greater than that in HCMV-DNA negative patients (P<0.05). Conclusion: HCMV infection can cause abnormal glucose metabolism in patients with T2DM, reduce insulin sensitivity, aggravate immune imbalance, and promote the progression of the disease.
